This is an old revision of the document!
The Omaha Sherlockian Society normally meets on the second Saturday of each month. Meetings are from 10:00 AM until noon, although members and visitors typically arrive a bit early to chat. Depending on the topics being discussed, a meeting may end a bit before noon.
A typical meeting will begin with reports of any events of interest to the members, such as conferences, new books, web sites, and new movies or television shows. Attention then turns to the discussion (or sometimes dissection) of a short story or novel, either from the Canon or a pastiche. The discussion is usually led by a member. The meetings close with reminders of coming activities, and of the item to be discussed at the next meeting.
Because of the pandemic, all recent meetings have been held using Zoom video conferencing software. The topic for each meeting and the Zoom meeting link are normally sent to members in e-mail on the Wednesday preceding the meeting. You can also find that information below.
If you haven't used Zoom for a meeting before, look here for some helpful information in getting started.
Our next meeting will be held on March 12th. The plan is to discuss the second, third, and possible the fourth stories in The Sign of Seven (that is, The Adventure of the Deadly Séance by James Lovegrove, The Adventure of the Heroic Tobacconist by Derrick Belanger, and The Dark Carnival by Andrew Lane). It is expected that this will be a Zoom-based meeting. Details will be added in the future.
During the meeting we will discuss at least the first story in The Sign of Seven edited by Martin Rosenstock (ISBN 9781785659034, E-ISBN 9781785659041, published by Titan Books). The first story is Death of a Mudlark by Stuart Douglas. We may also discuss the second story, “The Adventure of the Deadly Séance” by James Lovegrove, depending on how much time we spend discussing the first story. We will also decide, as a group, on how to proceed through the remaining stories.
The link to the Zoom meeting is https://unomaha.zoom.us/j/97531644981. A waiting room protocol is employed, and after you click on the link, there may be a short delay before you join the meeting.
The meeting will start about 10:00 AM, but you can join after about 9:30 AM.
The society usually has a dinner meeting at a local restaurant with a private meeting room. For several years the society met at Jerico's, a nice restaurant reasonably central to the members. Their meeting room has been updated and is now quite suitable for the meeting, which usuall takes place in October to celebrate the origin of the society.
This year the pandemic made it difficult to meet in October, November, or December of 2021 because of the lack of finding a suitable meeting place. We decided to wait until January 2022, assuming we could easily find a place to meet. And we did – Jerico's on January 15th. But member concerns about the increase in cases of the virus caused the meeting – which was this year to also celebrate Sherlock's birthday – to be cancelled.
